Effects of the Home Health Care Program on Maternal Anxiety and Confidence, Premature Infants' Growth and Hospital Utilization

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to develop the home health care program (HHCP) for the premature infant and their mother and to investigate its effects on the premature infant's growth, readmission, emergency visits, unplanned hospital visits, the anxiety of the premature infant's mother and the confidence of maternal role.
Methods
This study was the nonequivalent control pretest-posttest. The 43 premature infants and their mothers participated in this study. The controlled groups were 22 and the experimental groups were 21. The HHCP developed though the researched review and analysis of the premature infant's mother’s requests.
Results
The HHCP was composed of preparing discharge, premature infant care, and telephone counseling. Premature infant care was composed of feeding the baby safely, using medical device, assessing baby, bathing and touching. The HHCP had effects on premature mother's anxiety (p= 0.04), maternal role’s confidence (p=0.001) and had no effects on the premature infant’s growth, readmission, emergency visits, unplanned hospital visits between two groups.
Conclusion
The HHCP was effective on the premature infant mother's anxiety and maternal role’s confidence. Anxiety reduced, and maternal role’s confidence increased. To help the premature infant and their mother and to settle down, Home Health Nursing service had to be arranged before the discharge.
