Relationship between Self-efficacy, Social Support and Health Promoting Behavior in High School Students

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of self-efficacy, social supportand health promoting behavior in high school students.
Methods
The data was collected by self-reported questionnaires from 457, 1th and 2nd gradersfrom four high schools located in Jollabuk-do Province, Korea. Subjects completed the followingquestionnaires: self-efficacy, social support and health promoting behavior. The data was analyzedby descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson's correlation coefficientsand stepwise multiple regression using SPSS/WIN 18.0 program.
Results
The mean scores of self-efficacy, social support and health promoting behavior were2.90±0.50, 3.07±0.58 and 2.68±0.37, respectively. There was a significant positive correlationsthat could be seen in self-efficacy (r=.525, p<.001) as well as social support (r=.405, p<.001)in relation to health promoting behavior. The variables of health promoting behavior in high schoolstudents were self-efficacy, social support, health concern of student and health concern of parentswhich explained 37.6% of the cases.
Conclusion
The findings of this study indicated that there is a need to develop and apply nursingintervention to promote health promoting behavior in high school students. Therefore it is neededto develop nursing intervention programs to promote self-efficacy and social support.
