Abstract
Objectives
The common assumption in our society is that tall people seem much more attractive and powerful. Especially height has influence on physical and emotional development of children. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perception concerning height and factors affecting child height-promoting behavior among mothers.
Methods
A questionnaire-based survey was carried out with 164 mothers of 4th grade elementary school students in a general hospital, Busan from 1st March to 30th June, 2010. The collected data were analyzed by mean, percentile, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS 17.0 program.
Results
The mean age of the children was 10.5-years-old and the mean height was 139.69±8.46 cm (boys) and 140.82±7.33 cm (girls). Ideal adult height of man and woman was 179.45±3.14 cm and 166.29±3.32 cm, respectively. There were a clear difference between real height and desired. Desired adult height was 5~6cm higher than real 2007 Korean average height. Approximately 59.5% of the mothers had tried height- promoting behavior. Exercise, diet control, living habits, and information seeking were recognized as main behaviors for height-promoting. The regression model explained 20.7% of the variances in height-promoting behavior of mothers. The significant factors were mother's height, ideal woman height, and father's height. Mother's height is most powerful factor to height-promoting behavior of mothers.
Conclusions
The correct perceptions of height and the information of alternative therapies and various remedies are needed for children healthcare. The specialized program which focuses on establishment of children’s self-concept and self-identity should be developed to help children of short stature and their parent.
