Abstract
Objectives
The aim of this study was to examine how degree the physique of Korean youth has developed between 1940 and 1995.
Methods
We investigated the several studies which have conducted by other researchers in Korea between 1940 and 1995. These previous studies included the measurement of body height, weight and sitting height and we calculated the length of leg using height and sitting height.
Results
The increase in the length of leg surpassed the increase of body height and sitting height since 1980s. The study also depicted that the chronological increase of average leg length had been found in both genders (for male, 45.5 cm in 1940, 46.0 cm in 1953, 46.3 cm in 1967, 45.9 cm in 1978, 46.6 cm in 1983, 47.2 cm in 1988 and 47.6 cm in 1993; for female, 44.9 cm, 45.2 cm, 45.3 cm, 45.8 cm, 46.6 cm, 46.9 cm and 47.8 cm respectively). On the other hand, average sitting height has decreased chronologically in both genders (for male, 54.5 cm in 1940 and 52.4 cm in 1993; for female, 55.1 cm in 1940 and 52.3 cm in 1993).
Conclusions
The anthropometric results such as body height, weight and sitting height have increased with age. This increment was significant at the age of 20 to 24 which could be considered to be the point of growth completion. This tendency was prominent especially after 1970s. The average leg length which was calculated by body height and sitting height has been on the remarkable increase chronologically.
