Content Analysis of Illness Experiences in Adolescents with Asthma

Abstract
Objectives
: To explore the illness experiences of adolescent with asthma and to provide the data to develop nursing interventions for adolescent with asthma.
Methods
: A sample of 5 adolescent aged between 13 to 16 years with asthma were interviewed and content analysis was used to analyze the data.
Results
: Six categories and Twenty five attribute were derived for illness experiences in adolescents with asthma. Burden related to asthma included discomfort, difficulty, wearisome, worry, stress. Pattern of asthma management included troublesomeness, unconcern, ignorance, negative coping behavior, positive coping behavior. Understanding of self included shame, pitifulness, envy, self-confidence. Adjustment of illness included familiarity, acceptance, hope. Relationship of support system included thankfulness, regret, be scolded, support. Need of support included anticipation for care, desire for information.
Conclusions
: It recommended for nurses to understand illness experiences of adolescents with asthma and develop nursing interventions that adjusted to the adolescents. This interventions including above six criteria may help adolescents with asthma to encourage positive experiences and overcome negative experiences.
