This study was intended to estimate perception and attitude of female high school students towards marriage and having a child, and to provide basic information for the education about positive attitude toward birth.
Methods
A total of 1,682 subjects participated in this study. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire from March through September, 2005.
Results
The results of the study revealed that 63.0% of total subjects said they would get married. Of 1,060 students in favor of marriage, 78.1% answered 'to be happy with a beloved spouse' as the reason for marriage, the majority of subjects wanted to get married at age between 25 and 29. Among 1,060 students who wanted to get married, 97.9% of them wanted to have offspring, however, of 622 students who did not want to get married, 16.7% of them did not want to have offspring (p<0.01). The majority of subjects were aware of low birth rate in Korea. According to logistic regression analysis, the subject who live in a large city and being college-bound students would get married (p<0.01), and the statistically significant factors for predicting the attitude of having offspring, of the subjects who said they would get marred, were residence area (large city vs. county) and religion.
