Abstract |
Purpose This study attempts to examine the quality of life, sense of burden and the level ofdepression of the parents who have children with diabetes, clarify factors affecting the quality oflife of those parents, and assist them in improving quality of life.
Methods 108 parents having diabetic children aged 18 years or below, who are visiting theDiabetic Clinic, D University Medical Center in B City, were sampled for the current study. Thedata collected were analyzed by means of frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, ttest,ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and stepwise multiple regression with the aid of SAS 9.2 andIBM/SPSS 21.0.
Results The worst part of caring for the children was found to be dietary therapy. The qualityof life of the parents registered 3.31 points on a 5-point scale, sense of burden pointed to 2.48on a 5-point scale. Approximately 33.3%of the parents were in a mild depressive state and 12%were experiencing moderate depression. The factors that affected the quality of life of the parentswith diabetic children included depression, sense of burden, income and the level of education.
Conclusion The nurses in charge of caring for children with diabetes need to develop a nursingintervention program required in the assessment and management of their emotional aspects atthe early stage by paying attention to the parents who have children with diabetes. |
