Abstract |
Objectives : This study was conducted to examine the relationship among eating
disorders, physical symptoms and self-esteem among one- and fourth grade college women in Busan.
Methods : A self-administered questionnaire survey was carried out, from November 1st
to November 30th 2003, for a total 282 college women of the one-and fourth grade in one
university in Busan.
Results : Depending upon BMI(Body mass index), under weight group(BMI<20)
accounted for 62.%, normal weight group(BMI:20~25) 37.9%. However, college women who belong to normal weight group was less satisfied with their weight than underweight group. In normal and underweight groups, the total mean score of anorexia nervosa was higher than bulimia nervosa. The total mean score of perceived physical symptoms was 20.96 and subjects in this study showed the tendency giving the highest score on the item of fatigue and constipation. The score of eating disorders differed significantly by the BMI : the score
was highest in the group of normal body weighted. There was high positive correlation between BMI and eating disorders, and there was negative correlation between eating disorders and self-esteem, between physical symptoms and self-esteem.
Conclusions : From the results of this study, the eating disorders among college women were very serious and the perception of their body weight was distorted. Therefore, to prevent the eating disorders, professional intervention is needed. |
